My Grande Prairie area cell number starts with 780-876, I moved to Edmonton in 2017. The intercom system in my condo building couldn’t call long distance numbers, and I couldn’t give up my original number, so I got a 2nd phone with an Edmonton number. I found a budget cell provider that had call forwarding included in their cheapest basic plan, I don’t carry 2 phones I forwarded the new phone to my number, and I can buzz visitors to my building. The local number was $10 per month, but with $1 off for auto debit , and $2 off for referring someone that got a phone with them  I was paying $7 a month. That was great for about 4 years , now the price  is $13 per month.

So let me change my 780-876 number to be a local number of Edmonton.

Those intercoms / enterphones, unless they are older than dirt, can actually dial long distance numbers. The apartment or condo just doesn't want to spend the $0.07 it'll cost every time someone buzzes you. I know because the building I'm in, also in Edmonton, does allow long distance numbers for the enterphone and I've seen the monthly statement where we get charged the $0.07 per call because they're so short. For a large complex with over 100 units, it works out to add about $2 a month to the bill for my building.
