Someone made a Telus account with MY email address

I started getting emails from Telus earlier in the year addressed to someone named Fred, about upcoming plan changes and advertising for new services etc. I assumed they were spam and ignored them.

I’m now trying to make my own Telus account as I was interested in one of their services, and I’m unable to as “an account with this email address already exists.” However, when I attempt to email myself a “forgot password” link, it sends me an email for Fred to register his Telus account. When I click on the registration link, all it prompts me for is a postal code that was used to create the account with. Obviously, my own postal code does not work, and I don’t know Fred’s postal code.

The online chat agent had no suggestion for me other than to “create a new email address to make your Telus account with,” which is ridiculous and unhelpful. The four separate representatives on the phone either did not understand my issue at all, and kept repeating to me that it is impossible for someone to steal my identity, which is NOT my issue, or redirected me to other representatives who also either could not understand my problem, or ended the call with “I’ll keep an eye on it.” Whatever that means.

Can someone please help me? I tried asking if it’s possible for my email to simply be unlinked from Fred’s account, so he can hopefully still sign in with his phone number instead. I was told that is not an option. Is there nothing I can do? Is this not a privacy concern?
